Did you know? Hong Kong has one of the longest working hours in the world, and was ranked the 5th most stressed population out of 23 economies in a 2018 survey. In another research that surveyed 1,210 adults across all regions of Hong Kong, 73.4% stated that their workplace did not provide any programmes of support for staff mental health needs, while 60% did not know where to seek help regarding mental health issues outside of hospitals. Given that the greatest asset of any organisation is its staff, it is important to promote mentally healthy workplaces during these challenging times. It is important to view staff wellbeing as an ongoing process that reflects the individual characteristics of your organisation/school. A mentally healthy environment can be established by supporting the mental health of your colleagues/employees.

About the Engaging Leaders Course

While every school and organisation has established protocols & procedures regarding physical health, it is equally important to set up something similar for mental health as well. This could include designing work to minimise harm, building organisational resilience, enhancing individual resilience, promoting and facilitating early help-seeking, and supporting recovery and return to work. Our 90-mins Engaging Leaders course will assist managers to review the current organisational policies, and provide evidence-based guidelines to promote mentally healthy workplaces. This course is a starting place that provides the opportunity for people to discuss mental health problems in the workplace and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) generally.

If someone at your workplace is having difficulties with their performance due to their mental health problem, it is important for you to be prepared to undertake mental health first aid and offer reasonable adjustments and appropriate support. Mental Health First Aid is a practical skills-based training course that increases mental health awareness and literacy, reduces stigma, and gives employees the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers. It teaches employees how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses. It also leads to improved knowledge of mental illness, confidence to help someone with mental illness, and reduces unhelpful stigmatising attitudes that can prevent people from seeking help early. Since every workplace is different, it is important that the support is tailored to your specific workplace requirements.

What will you learn?

This is a 90-minute session and aimed at key personnel as a group. Both face-to-face and video conference training are available, and it can be delivered at your school/organisation. The course will provide you with the documentation tailored to your specific workplace requirements. The information within this course is based on the guidelines developed by the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and workplace wellbeing professionals.
