Teen Mental Health First Aid (teenMHFA)

Teen Mental Health First Aid (teenMHFA)

Empowering students to support peers and seek help early.

The Teen Mental Health First Aid (teenMHFA) course is specifically designed for secondary school students in Year 8 and above. It equips young people with the skills and confidence to recognise when a friend may be struggling with their mental health, and encourages timely support from a trusted adult.

Adolescents often turn to their peers when they feel overwhelmed, anxious, or upset. While this peer connection is important, it can also place pressure on individuals who may not know how to respond appropriately. TeenMHFA helps students understand how to support a friend while protecting their own wellbeing.

What Students Will Learn

This evidence-based programme helps students:

  • Identify early warning signs of a developing mental health concern
  • Recognise the signs of a mental health crisis, including suicidal thoughts or behaviours
  • Understand and apply the teenMHFA Action Plan
  • Involve a responsible, trusted adult when necessary to ensure appropriate help is provided

The course is interactive, age-appropriate, and encourages open conversations in a safe and supportive environment.

Course Format

  • Designed for students in Year 8 to Year 13
  • Delivered across three structured sessions:
    • 60 minutes for Years 8–10
    • 75 minutes for Years 11–13
  • Led by accredited Mental Health First Aid instructors
  • Students receive a teenMHFA manual and a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course

Please note: TeenMHFA can only be offered in schools where a proportion of staff are already trained as Youth Mental Health First Aiders. This ensures the school environment is well-prepared to support students during and after the training.

Why This Course Matters

Early intervention is key to promoting positive mental health outcomes among young people. By fostering awareness and equipping students with the right tools, TeenMHFA supports a whole-school approach to mental wellbeing. It reinforces the importance of peer support, self-care, and seeking adult assistance when needed.
