Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) Courses in Hong Kong

Supporting Young People Through Awareness, Skills, and Early Intervention

Mental health is a vital part of overall wellbeing, and for young people navigating adolescence and early adulthood, the challenges can be particularly complex. In recent years, the conversation around youth mental health has become more open, informed, and inclusive. Recognising early signs of distress and knowing how to respond appropriately can make a significant difference.

At Positive Wellbeing, our Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) courses are designed to equip adults—including educators, parents, social workers, and youth leaders—with practical tools to identify, support, and guide young people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.

Why Youth Mental Health First Aid Matters

In Hong Kong and across the region, young people face growing pressures—from academic demands to social expectations, online exposure, and the impacts of global uncertainty. These can contribute to rising levels of stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of all mental health conditions begin by the age of 14, and three-quarters by the mid-20s. Early intervention is crucial. Adults who are trained in YMHFA can play an essential role in recognising symptoms early, providing initial support, and helping young people access appropriate professional care if needed.

Course Overview: What You Will Learn

Our Youth Mental Health First Aid course provides:

  • A deeper understanding of common youth mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis, and substance use.
  • Practical strategies to recognise early signs and symptoms of mental distress in adolescents.
  • A structured action plan for offering initial support and encouraging appropriate professional help.
  • Guidance on how to maintain appropriate boundaries and promote wellbeing in school, home, or community settings.

This evidence-based course is suitable for anyone who regularly interacts with young people aged 12 to 24.

Our Experience and Impact

Since launching our YMHFA training in early 2016, Positive Wellbeing has delivered the course to over 1,100 participants across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. These include school staff, NGO workers, counsellors, and corporate professionals.

Over 950 participants have completed post-course feedback surveys, reflecting a strong engagement rate and an ongoing commitment to evaluating and improving our training. The feedback consistently highlights increased confidence in recognising mental health issues and offering timely support.

Creating Space for Meaningful Conversations

In addition to formal training, our “Conversation Series” workshops offer a more informal approach to building mental health awareness. These online sessions help individuals learn how to engage in supportive conversations with someone who may be struggling.

Open dialogue is a crucial step toward breaking stigma and encouraging help-seeking behaviour—especially in cultures where mental health can be a sensitive or less discussed topic.
